The horrendously stiff grade southbound out of Del Mar, CA, on the final stretch into San Diego proved to be a REAL workout for the "SILVER ROCKET LIMITED", which normally runs with 3 units of various models, bogging the 2 remanufactured F40PH-3s down to 22 MPH, while the ATSF 3751 got into a real "death struggle", bogging down to 8 MPH (had it rained, or, the sanders malfunctioned, a Pacific Surfliner would have had to shove the train up the hill!!!). In addition to the multitude of Amtrak PACIFIC SURLINERS, there were two special moves on the line on November 11, 2006: (1) a southbound steam excursion with the ATSF 3751 (a 3DTS product) with no diesel helpers, and, (2) the Rock Island's "SILVER ROCKET LIMITED", an "offline ROCKET," the Rock's version of the American Orient Express Cruise Train Operation, which had come down out of Seattle, WA. A typically busy day on the PACIFIC SURFLINE Route from San Diego to LA.
